James English Named Head Coach of Empire Women’s All-Stars

NEW YORK (February 13, 2017) — Empire GU named James English as Head Coach of the Empire Women’s All-Stars. The announcement was made today by Ken Pape, Empire GU President.

“We are excited to have James English join the Empire GU as Head Coach of the Empire Women’s All-Stars,” said Pape. “He has had a broad and noted career in rugby and he brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience. We expect he will have a significant impact on our Women’s All-Star program.”

English has played and coached rugby across England, Ireland and the United States. He studied and played rugby at the University of Northampton in England before returning to his native London to earn a Post Graduate Diploma of Education in Physical Education and Coaching.

As Head of Rugby and Long-Term Athlete Development at a Sports College in London, English worked with future Olympians across a variety of sports. He then moved to Dublin, Ireland, to play, teach and coach rugby at the famous Blackrock College.

Since moving to the United States, English has held a variety of rugby-related roles at the youth, collegiate and senior levels, coaching both men and women.

He oversaw rugby development as the Executive Director and HP Director for Rugby Pennsylvania and has coached with the Yale University Men’s Rugby team, Atavus USA Rugby Academy and Atavus All-Star Women.

English is currently Director of Rugby at Monroe College and backs and attack coach for USA Rugby Women’s Collegiate All-Americans. He also serves as the Head Coach of New York Rugby Club’s entry in the Women’s Premier League and is a coach with Play Rugby USA’s Community Olympic Development Program.
