Houston SaberCats Obtains Justin Basson

The Houston SaberCats signed Justin Basson for the 2024 Major League Rugby season after a trade with LA for 2024 salary cap considerations. The 29-year-old lock (30in February) is 6’6″ and 260 lbs.

Justin played 907 minutes in 15 matches, starting 13, and scored 1 try for Rugby ATL in 2023. He played 868 minutes in 15 matches, starting 13, and scored one try for Rugby ATL in 2022. He then played 171 minutes in 5 matches, starting 3 for the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship.

Justin is from Cape Town, South Africa. He attended Hoër Landbouskool Boland, Paarl, one of the country’s top rugby schools. He also played youth rugby with the UFS Shimlas Young Guns.

After high school, he played with the Blue Bulls Academy and won the 2013 U19s Provincial Championship, as well as the 2014 U21s Provincial Championship. In 2014 he was also a member of the South Africa U20s training squad.

From 2014-2015 he played with the  Free State Cheetahs, and in 2016 with the Central University of Technology CUT Ixias. In 2015-2016 he made 28 appearances for Free State XV in the 2015 Vodacom Cup. From 2016-2018 he made 29 appearances with the Free State Cheetahs, and from 2017-2019 made 30 appearances with the Cheetahs. In 2021 he played with Western Province and the DHL Stormers.

Justin has played Super Rugby, in the Currie Cup, and Vodacom Cup, and brings a wealth of experience to Rugby ATL for 2022.
