Georgia maintains Nations Cup lead after decisive Chile victory
Georgia asserted their dominance in the World Rugby Nations Cup on Saturday, defeating Chile 49-22 in Santiago. The Lelos’ performance, marked by seven tries and perfect conversions from fly half Luka Matkava, further strengthens their undefeated run in the competition.
Los Cóndores struggled with discipline early, facing two yellow cards in the first quarter that Georgia capitalized on to establish a significant lead.
Georgian Efficiency Exploits Chilean Discipline
The match began with early setbacks for Chile, as Javier Eissmann received a yellow card just three minutes into the game. Georgia promptly capitalized on the numerical advantage, with Bachuki Tchumbadze scoring the opening try. While Matías Garafulic put Chile on the scoreboard with a penalty, Georgian replacement hooker Vakhtang Jintcharadze extended their lead to 14-3.
Chile’s disciplinary issues continued when Santiago Videla received a yellow card shortly after Eissmann returned. This allowed Georgia’s Luka Ivanishvili to cross the try line, culminating in an opening quarter where Georgia outscored Chile by three tries to zero. The Lelos' efficient play against a depleted Chilean side highlighted their strategic advantage.
Cóndores Counter, Lelos Extend Lead
Despite the early deficit, Los Cóndores demonstrated resilience in the second quarter. Rookie winger Manuel Bustamante scored his inaugural test try for Chile, though Garafulic’s conversion attempt narrowly missed. Georgia, even with Tornike Kakhoidze temporarily off the field due to a yellow card, managed to score their fourth try through Beka Shvangiradze.
Chile’s center Santiago Videla added their second try, bringing the halftime score to 28-15 in favor of Georgia. The Georgians, however, maintained control through the second half, with Tornike Kakhoidze and Ioane Iashagashvili securing further tries to put the result beyond doubt. Vakhtang Jintcharadze completed a brace late in the game, with Matías Dittus scoring a consolation try for Chile, solidifying the 49-22 final score.
Looking Ahead for Both Nations
The victory means Georgia maintains its undefeated record in the World Rugby Nations Cup, a significant step in their international campaign. For Chile, the July Internationals conclude with victories against Hong Kong and Romania, but a notable loss to the formidable Georgian side. These matches serve as crucial preparation as Los Cóndores now look towards their November tour.
Chile is scheduled to face Portugal, Spain and Zimbabwe in Europe during November, providing further opportunities for international competition and development.
