Georgia outlasts Uruguay in high-scoring Nations Cup opener
Georgia defeated Uruguay 41-34 in a high-scoring Rugby Nations Cup opener at Estadio Charrúa, marking the first time these teams have met in Montevideo. The Eastern Europeans secured the win in a match featuring ten tries, five from each side, demonstrating strong attacking intent from both squads.
Uruguay's Los Teros initially seized momentum, opening the scoring after eight minutes with hooker Joaquín Myszka driving over from a lineout. Georgia's Luka Matkava quickly responded with a try on 15 minutes, then added a penalty and converted Nikoloz Sutidze’s 23rd-minute try for a 17-7 lead Matkava's early scoring.
The first half saw a rapid exchange of points. Uruguayan fly half Jean Cotarmanac’h landed a penalty, followed by Georgia’s Matkava adding another. Los Teros then narrowed the gap when Felipe Arcos Pérez set up Juan Gonzalez for a try in the corner after Georgian captain Davit Niniashvili received a yellow card for a head-clash challenge on Pérez. The intense first half concluded with Georgia leading 20-15.
Los Teros briefly take lead, Lelos respond
Uruguay started the second half strong, with Felipe Arcos Pérez scoring and Cotarmanac’h converting, giving Los Teros a 22-20 lead. This advantage was short-lived, however, as Uruguay soon found themselves a player down with Joaquín Myszka receiving a yellow card Uruguay's numerical disadvantage.
Georgia capitalized on their numerical advantage as Tornike Jalagonia scored. Uruguay's Jean Cotarmanac’h produced a moment of individual brilliance, executing a cross-kick that perfectly sat up for Juan Manuel Alonso to score, reducing Georgia’s lead.
Georgia secures victory, look ahead to Samoa
Georgia ultimately put the game out of reach with a penalty try, quickly followed by Mikheil Alania scoring. Uruguay, showcasing their resilience, fought until the final whistle, earning a consolation try from Ignacio Rodríguez Bosch Uruguay's late try.
This 41-34 victory officially positions Georgia as a team to contend with in the Nations Cup as the tournament begins. The Lelos will next face Samoa, while Uruguay will shift their focus to an upcoming match against Romania. The contest highlighted both teams’ attacking capabilities and their ability to convert opportunities into points.
