Chile hosts Romania in Nations Cup Opener
Chile’s Los Cóndores will host Romania in Santiago this Saturday, marking the opening round of the World Rugby Nations Cup, a new competition designed for nations excluded from the revamped Nations Championship.
This match represents Chile's first Test of 2026, with the home advantage stemming from the Americas hosting July Internationals as Americas Rugby News reported.
The Nations Cup features 12 teams that have already secured their spots in Rugby World Cup 2027 but are not part of the top-tier Nations Championship. This structure, which lacks promotion and relegation, has sparked considerable debate within the global rugby community according to Americas Rugby News.
Initially established by World Rugby, the Nations Cup includes teams such as Canada, USA, Uruguay, Samoa, Tonga, Georgia, Hong Kong, Portugal, Spain, Romania, Zimbabwe, and Chile. This new model ensures competitive international fixtures for these nations in the year preceding the World Cup in Australia, a significant change from previous cycles Américas Rugby News noted. However, it also means these teams will not face Tier 1 opposition. Chile, currently ranked 18th globally with 66.72 points, enters the tournament having qualified for RWC 2027 by defeating Samoa.
Chile's Recent Performance and RWC Qualification
Chile has been one of rugby's most improved nations this decade, achieving a historic qualification for the Rugby World Cup 2023. This success was fueled by strategic investments in High Performance, which elevated the caliber of domestic players.
Their RWC 2023 qualification journey notably included victories over regional rivals Canada and the USA. Further solidifying their rise, Los Cóndores then secured their RWC 2027 spot through a decisive win against Samoa.
Squad Experience and Key Players
Both Chile and Romania bring a mix of experience to this opening fixture, with several players over 30 years old. For Chile, veterans like S. Videla (43), M. Dittus (39), C. Saavedra (39), D. Saavedra (37), J. Carrasco (37), J. Eissmann (37), R. Fernández (34), and M. Sigren (31) highlight their seasoned roster. The squad also includes emerging talents such as Augusto Böhme, Joaquín Milesi, Benjamín Videla, Tomás Salas, and Nicolás Garafulic.
Romania's lineup features experienced players including A. Savin (42), M. Simionescu (40), G. Rupanu (31), D. Plai (30), N. Onuțu (28), I. Hartig (24), and J. Tomane (21).
