Chile Secures Dominant Nations Cup Win Over Romania
Santiago, CHILE — Chile’s national rugby team, Los Cóndores, commenced their World Rugby Nations Cup campaign with a decisive 48-31 victory over Romania at Estadio Nacional. This win saw Chile demonstrating character to assert an early dominance in the new tournament.
The match, which remained competitive for long stretches, ultimately saw Los Cóndores pull away in the second half through a blend of strong maul play and clinical finishing.
First Half Exchanges and Chilean Momentum
Chile opened the scoring through a penalty from center Matías Garafulic. Minutes later, Garafulic converted Lucas Berti’s try, quickly establishing an early lead. However, Romania responded with tries from Ștefan Marko Buruiană and Adrian Mitu, briefly taking a 14-10 advantage.
Garafulic and Gabriel Rupanu exchanged penalties before Javier Carrasco and Raimundo Martínez crossed for tries, securing a 27-17 lead for Los Cóndores at halftime. This period highlighted the back-and-forth nature of the contest with both teams creating scoring opportunities.
Second Half Surge Seals the Result
Romania’s Dylan Schwartz scored early in the second half, narrowing Chile’s lead to three points. However, Diego Escobar then scored the first of his two tries for Chile, re-establishing a comfortable cushion. Following another dominant maul, Escobar grounded the ball to extend the lead once more.
Even as Romania continued to press, reducing the deficit to 34-31, captain Martín Sigren emerged with a crucial try to solidify Chile’s advantage. In the closing minutes, Los Cóndores maintained pressure, with Escobar completing his brace following strong maul work, and Santiago Videla converting to finalize the 48-31 scoreline, as reported by Americas Rugby News.
