Hilsenbeck clutch kick lifts Eagles over Portugal, boosts ranking
The USA Eagles defeated Portugal 30-29 in a dramatic test match in Denver, Colorado, on July 4, with fly half Chris Hilsenbeck securing the victory through a 79th-minute penalty kick. This hard-fought win saw the Eagles ascend two places in the World Rugby Rankings, moving from 16th to 14th stature Americas Rugby News reported, surpassing both Portugal and Uruguay.
The match was filled with incident, including a yellow card for each team and two red cards issued against Portugal.
Early Portuguese Dominance and Shifting Momentum
Portugal's Manuel Cardoso Pinto, a former Peñarol winger/fullback, was a prolific scorer, notching three tries in the opening 23 minutes. His first score came just two minutes in, followed by another in the ninth minute, which Samuel Marques converted. After Cory Daniel's 14th-minute try for the Eagles, converted by Hilsenbeck, Cardoso Pinto completed his hat-trick in the 23rd minute, giving Os Lobos significant momentum.
However, two critical moments shifted the balance. Dom Besag's cross-kick set up Seattle Seawolves' Paddy Ryan for a 29th-minute try. Then, in the 31st minute, Italian referee Gianluca Gnecchi red-carded Manuel Vareiro for kicking Perry Mayo in the face during a high-ball contest Vareiro's Red Card.
Further compounding Portugal's woes, Martin Bello received a yellow card in the 27th minute, leaving them with 13 players. The Eagles capitalized on this numerical advantage, with Dom Besag scoring in support of Kapeli Pifeleti's line break as the half concluded, giving the USA a 21-19 lead at halftime.
Second-Half Penalties Secure Victory
The second half saw fewer tries but maintained high tension. Cardoso Pinto scored his fourth try in the 63rd minute, assisted by a brilliant break and pass from Raffaele Storti. Replacement Hugo Aubry converted, putting Portugal ahead 29-27.
Minutes later, Portugal faced further disciplinary action when flanker Benjamín Bonasso reported being stomped on by replacement hooker Pedro Vicente. The Television Match Official confirmed the foul play TMO confirmation, resulting in Portugal's second red card.
Despite the second red card, the Eagles did not convert the immediate penalty into points. All of the USA's second-half points came from the boot of former German international Chris Hilsenbeck, who slotted penalties in the 55th, 61st, and the decisive 79th minute. Samuel Marques contributed one penalty for Portugal in the second half.
Eagles Climb World Rankings
The victory was significant beyond the scoreline. The Eagles' triumph over Portugal marked a notable moment for USA Rugby, propelling them higher in the international standings. Climbing above both Portugal and Uruguay indicates a positive trajectory for the national team on the global stage rankings ascent.
