Canada and Spain played to a dramatic 42-42 draw in Edmonton, a captivating start to their World Rugby Nations Cup campaigns that also served as a preview for their Rugby World Cup 2027 Pool C encounter in Australia.

The high-scoring affair saw both teams demonstrate an ability to exchange blows, with the scoreline tied 21-21 at halftime and ultimately deadlocked after 80 minutes.

Back-and-Forth Battle in Edmonton

Clarks Stadium hosted a vibrant crowd of 3,476 fans who witnessed a relentlessly active contest from opening whistle to end. The game began with early scoring, as Los Leones fly half Gonzalo López executed an accurate cross-kick for Alberto Carmona to score a mere three minutes into the match, followed by a challenging conversion from López.

Canada’s response came swiftly. After an initial raid saw the ball held up, a quick tap allowed Mason Flesch to power over for the North Americans, with Peter Nelson’s conversion leveling the score at 7-7 within 10 minutes.

The first half established a pattern of immediate reply. Second-rower Antonio Ray Suárez scored from a maul for Spain, converted by López to regain a seven-point lead. Just five minutes later, Canadian forwards initiated an attack that saw No. 8 Tyler Ardron offload to second-rower Jason Higgins for Canada's second try, allowing Nelson to level the scores again.

Estanislao ‘Tani’ Bay, the Argentine scrum-half for Spain, finished a team try to open the second quarter, later scoring a double. Canadian flanker Mason Flesch also achieved two tries, his first coming after a series of phases led to a penalty, enabling him to cross over. Nelson's boot ensured the 21-21 halftime score.

The relentless scoring continued into the second half. Tani Bay completed his double just two minutes after the resumption, with López again converting to give Los Leones a seven-point lead. However, Canada showed resolve when Piers von Dadelszen carried strongly, paving the way for Tyler Ardron to score in the 46th minute Americas Rugby News reporting this match progression.
