Ellie Kildunne receives honorary degree from University of Leeds
England Red Roses fullback Ellie Kildunne has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Leeds, acknowledging her significant contributions and achievements in rugby. The accolade follows a season where Kildunne garnered numerous awards and recognitions, highlighting the growing prominence of women's rugby (I1) in the United Kingdom and globally.
Kildunne expressed that receiving the honorary degree felt surreal, noting it underscores the progress women's rugby has made in achieving such public recognition. She emphasized her pride in representing Yorkshire and serving as an inspiration for others to pursue their passions describing the award as a huge honor.
A Season of Accolades for Kildunne
The honorary degree adds to an impressive list of honors for Kildunne in the 2025-2026 season. She was recently named the Rugby Union Writers’ Club Personality of the Year after another outstanding 12 months for both her club and the national team. Her on-field performance included two tries in the Rugby World Cup semifinal victory against France and another crucial score in the final against Canada, contributing to England’s continued dominance.
Beyond the pitch, Kildunne became the first women's rugby player to be shortlisted for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, finishing as runner-up. Her unique impact was also recognized with a custom-made Barbie doll in her likeness Kildunne’s achievements saw her finish runner-up, further solidifying her status as a role model.
Inspiration Beyond the Field
During the graduation ceremonies, held in the University’s Grade II-listed Great Hall, Kildunne offered advice to graduating students advising students on their path. She encouraged them to maintain their passion and drive, acknowledging that the path to success is rarely straightforward. Her message highlighted the importance of resilience, having no expectations but high hopes, and allowing these qualities to lead to unforeseen opportunities.

Kildunne’s recognition aligns with the university's celebration of significant achievements, making her a notable figure in both sports and broader societal influence.
