England considers walking off pitch over potential racist abuse
England's rugby players are considering abandoning their match against Argentina on Saturday if any racial abuse is directed at their black squad members, captain Jamie George confirmed. This strong stance follows incidents of racist slurs targeting two players during their last visit to Argentina a year ago.
George, who witnessed the previous abuse, emphasized that the team will not tolerate a repeat, promising “the strongest of reactions” if such behavior occurs again. The potential action underscores a united front against racism in rugby.
Previous incidents and unresolved complaints
During the second Test in San Juan last July, replacement prop Asher Opoku-Fordjour and Chandler Cunningham-South were subjected to racist abuse from a section of home supporters. The incidents reportedly took place during the warm-up and the first half of the match.
World Rugby confirmed England made a complaint following the 2023 incidents, but a subsequent investigation was unable to identify the individual perpetrators, a point also made by the BBC. George, though not personally targeted, described the experience as something he will “remember for the rest of my life” because it affected his teammates.
Developing a contingency plan
George stated that England has discussed potential contingency plans for Saturday's match in Santiago del Estero, including leaving the field of play if deemed necessary. "It is something being considered, yeah," George told The Guardian Rugby Union, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
While expressing optimism that the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) has taken the matter seriously, George noted that England also has a "plan B." The immediate protocol, according to George, involves making the referee aware of any observed abuse so it can be officially logged and appropriate protocols can be initiated.
The England captain has been consulting with his black teammates, including Opoku-Fordjour, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Noah Caluori, and uncapped Immanuel Iyogun, to ensure a powerful, unified response. He acknowledged that as a white player he has never experienced anything like that and so his teammates' perspectives are crucial in formulating the response.
Atmosphere and upcoming fixture
The upcoming match is set against a backdrop of potentially high emotions. The BBC Rugby Union recalled that the last meeting between the two nations in November ended in a heated exchange, with Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi accusing England flanker Tom Curry of bullying and physical altercation.
The Argentina team's passionate fan base, further energized by a "Lionel Messi-inspired comeback" in a recent football World Cup semi-final, is expected to create an intense atmosphere in Santiago del Estero. England has a strong historical advantage, having won nine of their past 10 encounters with the Pumas. George, who is captaining the side with Maro Itoje rested, was a late withdrawal from the starting XV in San Juan last year, but was present at the game.
