World Rugby has confirmed the Pacific Nations Cup will return in September, a two-week, four-team knockout tournament hosted by Japan. This marks a significant reduction from the 2025 iteration, which featured six teams over four weeks, and will present a condensed challenge for Canada, Fiji, and the USA leave a comment.

The tournament will open in Osaka before concluding a week later with finals in Tokyo, a departure from previous years like 2025 when the finals were hosted by the USA finals hosted by the USA. Notably, traditional participants Samoa and Tonga will not compete this year, though World Rugby stated both unions would continue to receive targeted high-performance support amid their financial challenges, Americas Rugby News reported Samoa and Tonga will not compete.

Tournament Structure and Participants

The 2026 Pacific Nations Cup moves to a straight knockout format, a shift from the two-stage structure seen in previous years. Canada, Fiji, Japan, and the USA will contest the short event. This iteration is considerably smaller than the 2025 tournament which involved six teams, with Samoa and Tonga notably absent from the lineup of Pacific Island nations that have historically been core participants since the competition's 2006 introduction Pacific Island nations have been core teams.

For the USA rugby news, the tournament offers another opportunity for international competition against established rugby nations, potentially building momentum. The event also stands distinct from a previously scheduled September 5 test match between Japan and Canada in Niigata, which will proceed outside the Pacific Nations Cup framework Japan and Canada in Niigata.

Host Cities and Knockout Stages

Osaka will host the opening round of the tournament, setting the stage for the four competing nations. The following week, the action moves to Tokyo for the decisive final rounds. This structure dictates that teams must perform immediately in a win-or-go-home scenario, intensifying the competition.

The schedule in Tokyo includes a Third Place Final at 16:00 local time, followed by the First Place Final at 19:05 local time First Place Final. This double-header format ensures a clear championship outcome and offers all teams a second match, even those who do not progress to the main final. Teams will be looking to gain valuable experience and form particularly for Canada faces Spain in crucial World Rugby Nations Cup opener.
