England U20s dominate USA, prepare for Argentina decider
England's Under-20 squad delivered a decisive 10-try performance against the United States at the Junior World Championship in Georgia, securing a dominant win and setting up a Pool C decider against Argentina.
Following their initial 34-27 victory over Ireland, England’s coaching staff, led by Andy Titterrell, made several adjustments for the second match, including five changes to the backline BBC Rugby Union identified.
Early English Dominance
England established firm control from the outset, scoring ten tries throughout the match. Harlequins hooker Jerold Gorleku notably contributed two tries during this initial period, as reported by BBC Rugby Union. By halftime, England had amassed a significant lead, heading into the break up 49-14.
The English effort saw tries from Lewis, Cunnison, Scola, Gorleku (2), Pearson, Lilley, Weimann, Treacey, and Offiah, with Keylock converting nine of them. This strong offensive display underscored England's ambition to replicate their 2024 tournament victory.
USA's Second-Half Resilience
Despite England’s considerable lead, the United States demonstrated resilience in the second half. Center Dane Mitchell notably broke through England's defense to score a hat-trick, creating a temporary shift in momentum. However, the deficit proved too large for the USA to overcome, according to BBC Rugby Union's account.
England ultimately regained their composure, adding further tries in the final ten minutes through Connor Treacey and Tyler Offiah to solidify their comfortable victory. A try by Bath wing Tyler Offiah was disallowed, but England still secured the convincing win, with RugbyPass highlighting the expected intense step up from a prior 'friendly' fixture England's coach observed.
Pool C Showdown Looms
The victory positions England for a critical Pool C decider against Argentina. The Pumas have also shown strong form in the tournament, first defeating the United States 78-14 before securing a 62-40 win over Ireland. Both teams entered this final pool match with perfect records against the USA and Ireland, making their upcoming encounter a direct clash for the semi-final spot.
The structure of the tournament dictates that only the winner of each pool progresses to the semi-finals. This makes the England versus Argentina match, scheduled for Tuesday at 12:30 BST, a must-win contest for both nations, as the BBC detailed the implications.
Anticipating the Decider
England's head coach, Steve Tandy, anticipates a significant increase in intensity for the game against Argentina. He expects the inclusion of England-based players to boost the side, especially after a less competitive 'friendly' fixture against the Barbarians. RugbyPass noted that Tandy foresees a 'significant step up in intensity' Tandy stated for the upcoming challenge.
The performance against the USA, while strong overall, also provided lessons, particularly regarding the team's defensive lapses during the second half. England will need to maintain their clinical attacking form while shoring up their defense to overcome a robust Argentinian side and secure their path further into the tournament.
