Toulouse secures historic fourth consecutive Top 14 title
Toulouse continued its historic dominance of French rugby, clinching a fourth consecutive Top 14 title after defeating Montpellier 28-20 in the 2026 final. The victory not only extended their reign as champions but also saw American loosehead prop David Ainu'u contribute to the club's unprecedented success.
The 2026 title solidifies Toulouse's position as a modern rugby dynasty, further adding to their record 25 Boucliers de Brennus, the symbol of French club rugby supremacy. This latest triumph marks the club's sixth and the first time they have won four consecutive titles.
Ainu'u and Argentines Central to Success
David Ainu'u, a significant US rugby export, featured for Toulouse as a replacement loosehead prop in the final, contributing to the club's championship win. His involvement highlights the growing international talent pool attracted to Europe's top leagues.
Beyond Ainu'u, the final also featured a strong Argentine contingent. Santiago Chocobares started at inside center for Toulouse, with three other Argentines on their roster: Juan Cruz Mallía, Efraín Elías, and Tomás Rapetti. Mallía, though injured in November, is a key figure, while Rapetti has primarily played for the espoirs (academy) team in his inaugural season, Americas Rugby News reported.
Montpellier’s lineup included two Pumas: fly-half Domingo Miotti and winger Justo Piccardo. Miotti successfully converted two penalties and a try scored by his countryman Piccardo, with Miotti also assisting in the try's creation.
Pumas' Futures and Toulouse's Dynasty
Several of the Argentine players in the Top 14 final, including Piccardo, Rapetti, Elías, Mallía, and Chocobares, received call-ups for Argentina in 2025. Miotti, however, is yet to be selected under Felipe Contepomi's tenure as head coach. All of these Top 14 finalists could potentially join the Pumas squad currently preparing to face Scotland on July 4.
Toulouse’s victory completes a historic four-in-a-row achievement, building on their titles in 2023, 2024, and 2025. This remarkable run, coupled with their record six Champions Cup titles, including one in 2024, firmly establishes Toulouse as the most successful and enduring dynasty in both French and European club rugby history, according to Americas Rugby News. Their consistent performance underscores a relentless pursuit of excellence unparalleled in the sport.
