Wales prepares squad for inaugural Nations Championship 2026

Wales Head Coach Steve Tandy plans to reduce his squad significantly next week in preparation for the inaugural Nations Championship in July 2026. This tournament replaces the traditional July and November international windows, presenting a new format for global rugby competition.

Nations Championship Structure and Participants

The Nations Championship organizes twelve teams into two distinct groups. One group comprises the Six Nations teams: England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The second group, designated "Rest of the World," includes Argentina, Australia, Fiji, Japan, New Zealand, and South Africa informing the format of the competition. This new structure aims to offer insights into potential Rugby World Cup selections.

Wales' Preparations and Squad Dynamics

Tandy's decision follows Wales' 33-31 victory over the Barbarians in an uncapped warm-up match at Allianz Stadium. The coach intends to cut at least 11 players from his initial 48-man squad, aiming for a final roster of 32 to 34. This reduction is necessitated by injuries to Louie Hennessey, Keiron Assiratti, and Liam Belcher, and the reintegration of 13 players from English and French clubs who were unavailable for the Barbarians game due to it falling outside World Rugby's international window reviewing selection for the tournament.

Key players joining the squad include Exeter lock Dafydd Jenkins, scrum-half Tomos Williams (Saracens-bound), props Nicky Smith and Rhys Carre, and Bristol back Louis Rees-Zammit. Tandy noted that the Barbarians match was a "brilliant hit-out" despite a sparse crowd, offering valuable game time for uncapped players like Rhys Barratt, Ben Warren, Harrison Keddie, and Ryan Woodman, as well as returning injured players such as Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake commenting on the Barbarians match utility.

World Rugby Eligibility Rules Under Scrutiny

The Nations Championship rosters highlight the complexities of World Rugby's player eligibility regulations. Players can qualify for a country by birth, parental or grandparental nationality, 60 months of exclusive residency, or ten years of cumulative residency. World Rugby has frequently altered these rules detailing player eligibility criteria.

A November 2025 change, specifically requested by England, now permits players like former South Africa U20 representative Benhard Janse van Rensburg, who moved to England as an adult professional, to represent England. This contrasts with past instances where teams like Spain were disqualified from Rugby World Cup qualifying for fielding France U20 players, illustrating what some describe as inconsistent management of eligibility laws highlighting eligibility rule changes.

Further controversy arises from former World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont's eligibility changes, which allow players to represent a second country after a three-year stand-down period. This change occurred after Romania was disqualified from a Rugby World Cup for fielding a former Tonga 7s player. Beaumont’s rule subsequently benefited Scotland, which selected former England and Australia players for a World Cup referencing previous eligibility rule impacts.

Upcoming Nations Championship Fixtures

Wales is set to play Fiji at Cardiff City Stadium next Saturday, followed by away matches against Argentina and South Africa. These games will test the newly formed squad and provide critical preparation for the demanding tournament schedule.
