Austin Herd Re-Signs Moe Abdelmonem

Austin Herd re-signed Mohamed ‘Moe’ Abdelmonem for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old openside flanker is 5’10” and 215 lbs.

Moe played 518 minutes in 10 matches for the team in 2019 and scored 2 tries. He carried 25 times for 119 meters and made 111 tackles.

Moe is from Egypt but moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2009. He attended Al Khor Internation School from 1995-2007 and played rugby and soccer. He attended Citadel High School in 2009-2010 and played on the Phoenix Rugby Team. From 2012-2016, Moe attended Saint Mary’s University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, majoring in Finance. He also played rugby while at the university and also for the Halifax Tars.

Moe played representative rugby for the Nova Scotia Keltics and regional rugby with the Atlantic Rock in the Canadian Rugby Championship. He also played rugby in New Zealand with Spotswood URFC.

Moe is on the Canadian National Team radar and moved to British Columbia where he played for James Bay Athletic Association. He played for James Bay against the Houston SaberCats in January 2018. He also was selected for the Vancouver Rugby Union Crimson Tide but was unavailable at that time.

Moe also played professionally for the Ontario Arrows against the New England Free Jacks in 2018 and appeared in one preseason 2019 match for Austin Elite Rugby. Visa issues have now been resolved and Moe will join Austin Elite Rugby ahead of their match against the Glendale Raptors on March 9.

Rugby Nova Scotia is delighted to announce that Moe Abdelmonem has signed his first professional contract with Austin Elite Rugby.

The formal Keltics and Tars RFC number 7 signed with the Major League Rugby franchise today and had this to say  “I am extremely excited for a new chapter but won’t forget the roots of rugby Nova Scotia and the Tars.”

A Rugby NS provincial coach spoke about Moe as a player – “We were lucky to have Moe through the Keltics pathway and are delighted that he will now get to give his dream of becoming a professional Rugby player, we are incredibly proud of him and know that we will continue to impress”.
