Austin Herd Re-Signs Philip Hanson

Austin Elite Rugby re-signed Philip Hanson for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 26-year-old loosehead prop is 6’3″ and 250 lbs.

During the 2019 MLR season, Philip played in one match for 8 minutes off the bench against the Toronto Arrows on April 14.

Philip is from Dallas, Texas and lives in Coppell. He attended Coppell High School  and helped to begin the rugby team, but his participation in football limited his availability. He then attended Texas A&M University from 2011-2016 where he played rugby for the Aggies at several positions and earning Red River All-Conference honors at No. 8. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Graphic Design. He currently utilizes those skills as a digital marketing specialist.

Philip has played rugby for the Austin Huns in both 15s and 7s since 2016 and last season earned the Most Valuable Forward award with the Austin Huns, as well as joining Austin Elite.

Austin Herd Comments

“Becoming a professional player has been my dream of mine ever since I started playing,” said Philip. “I am eager to grow my game in the place I call home.”

“Phil came to us from the Huns as an injury cover late last season and did not look out of place in his core roles at the MLR level,” said Andrew Suniula. “He’s joining the Herd from the start this time around and we’re excited for his development and contribution in 2020.”

Welcome to the Herd, Philip Hanson! #jointheherd
