“Following a fantastic five years as Head Coach of Boston Rugby Club, Mike ‘Dimo’ Diamantopoulos will be taking a step back from his coaching involvement. Dimo will of course remain involved with the club he has been so strongly involved in growing, continuing to bolster the strength of the team from a recruitment advisory position. His continued involvement in the landscape of USA Rugby combined with his contacts around the world have always proved to be a tremendous asset to the club and we’re thrilled to have him remain with us in such an important capacity. Since the Summer, Mike has become more and more heavily involved with the coaching team at Harvard University and their success during the Fall season (losing only to Ivy League powerhouse, Dartmouth) is testament to what he is capable of achieving as a coach.
Although Dimo is a big loss to our coaching staff, Boston Rugby Club is excited to officially announce his replacement in Nigel Conroy. Supporters will know Nigel well from the past two years he’s been a staple in the starting line up at Hooker. Having proved himself as a leader on the field time and again, Nigel already has the respect and admiration of his former team-mates. We’re confident that he’ll be the right man to build the team around.
Conroy, originally from O’Brien’s Bridge, Ireland, moved to Boston in 2013. Before making the move across the Atlantic, he had a highly successful playing career with Shannon Rugby, Cambridge University, Shelford RFC and English Championship team, Rotherham Titans.
Nigel expressed his passion for Boston Rugby, “I’m excited to take on the challenge of rebuilding Boston Rugby Club to it’s former glory. The club has an incredible history within American Rugby, dating back further than most teams and we owe it to the club’s traditions as players and coaches to remain a team to be feared on the East Coast”.
Nigel and his coaching staff began preseason with the team 3 weeks ago and the team are already feeling the benefits of a fresh voice. “The lads are excited to be back together after the winter break and it’s clear that the team are already responding well to Nigel’s ideas and ethos.” said Kiwi flyhalf, Richie Lobb.”
