“Try Rugby USA Roadshow Coach Education Session Synopsis

Dates: Saturday, February 20 – Morris, NJ at Morris County Public Safety Academy

Presenters: Premiership Rugby (4 Coach Educators, 1 CSR) British Council/FOBC (2 reps), Tiger Rugby (4 coaches all 200 level or higher certified)

Session Synopsis Please note that session topics will vary based on the specific areas of interests of registered session participants and the specialized expertise of Premiership Rugby coach educators conducting the sessions

Registration and meet for coffee. Coaches will be available to mingle Introduction to PRL and BC

Split group into 3-4 and then rotate them through 3-4 different topic stations

Topics may include: Warmup Lifting Plyometrics/Pilates Yoga Cardio Functional Strength Stretching Nutrition The role of supplements Pre-habilitation/Rehabilitation Cool Down/Post-Match

Problem Solving Interactive Session (Auditorium/Meeting Space)

PRL coach will give an intro to the topic to be discussed and then group broken into smaller groups to work collectively and collaboratively on the challenge to design a solution – each group has a PRL or Tiger coach sitting with them guiding them through the interaction

Topic may include: o Player profiling for recruitment o Session vs season planning o Player positional profiling and KPI’s. o The concept of continuity or general movement o Go forward o Attack space o Life of the ball o Early support players o Late support players o Introduction to video analysis

Hot Topics – Premiership Rugby Insights & Best Practices Sessions

3-4 hot topic talk/ short presentations followed by questions from the audience

Topics may include: o Creating a professional player. What does the Academy and player pathway in the UK look like? o What is culture and how do we integrate it into our team, clubs and the greater community? o The how to handle/nurture/train the crossover athlete? o Creating cohesion in club, team and community o Mental skills and discipline o Life skills/rugby skills integration o Inside the mind of the player – the player/coach connection o Building a coaching team and working with club management/owner/board/stakeholders

PRL partnership with BC and introduction to Try Rugby USA – Q&A format

A skills progression session using one of the local youth rugby clubs as test subjects.

Break group into 3-4 smaller groups that rotate between skills stations

o Catch-pass o Breakdown o Scrums o Lineouts o Safe Tackle technique o Head positioning o Transition from flag/touch to tackle o Layering progressions o Spatial relationships in defense o Tactical kicking/penalties/punting/grub kick o Kick-off receipt

Open Discussion and Q&A Session (Auditorium/Meeting Space or Outside Weather Permitting)

Panel of PRL and Tiger coaches with discussion/debate open audience Q&A session o Building youth programs o How PRL perspective of the US market o Growth of 7s vs 15s o Olympic impact o Growth of women’s rugby o Introducing athletes new to the game (Crossover athletes in U.S) o Finding the right opportunities for player development o What clubs can do to strengthen their community ties o How to deal with lack of referees in the game o What resources are out there to become a better coach

Coaches will be invited to join the PRL and Tiger Coaches for informal interaction and further discussions at local pub.”
