Press Release: Austin Huns Rugby Football Club
“The Austin Huns Rugby Football Club wins over Houston Athletic 40-7

Austin, TX (December 7, 2015). On a beautiful sunny day in Austin, Texas, the Huns Rugby club opened the 2015-16 Red River Rugby Premiership season with a convincing 40-7 victory over longtime Houston rivals HARC. Conditions were perfect for players and spectators alike at the Huns’ field on Nixon Lane, and the crowd was treated to a fast paced match with lots of scoring.
The Huns  jumped to an early lead with scores by two recent signings, Kyle Breytenbach of Capetown, South Africa and Lomani Tongotongo of Auckland, New Zealand. Breytenbach, wearing the #7 jersey, opened the scoring after only 5 minutes with an unconverted try in the corner. Fifteen minutes later, inside center “Mani” leaped over a pile to score in the opposite corner, this time coolly converted by flyhalf Thierry Daupin. Just before half time Breytenbach scored again to give the Huns a 19-5 lead at the break. The only negative was an ankle injury to Fijian flyer Tuwi Rokodulu. Fortunately, native Austinite Alex Liles, back from a year abroad playing with the famed Brothers club in Brisbane, Australia, was on hand to sub in.

The second half began much the same as the first, this time with scrumhalf Gio Bonilla scoring. A local product from Austin’s Stony Point High School, Bonilla has honed his game at several Atavus Elite player camps and playing for Serevi Selects in sevens. The Huns continued to dominate in both territory and possession, aided by a strong lineout. A slicing run by Liles, converted by Daupin, gave the Huns a 33-0 with 20 minutes to go. HARC kept battling, however, and after several phases of pressure inside the Huns’ 22 they were rewarded with a try under the posts. The Austin side struck back quickly with big man Matt Potchad bursting through to finish the scoring in the final minutes.

The Huns’ B-side lost a hard fought game to HARC B, fading in the second half to go down 12-27. Next week the Huns’ Division 3 side the Horde take on local rivals San Marcos Greys at Nixon Lane. The premier side will be back in action on December 19th when they travel to Dallas to face the Harlequins.
