San Diego Legions Re-Signs Marcus Tupuola

The San Diego Legion re-signed Marcus Tupuola for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old wing is 5’10” and 195lbs.

Marcus is in the USA Sevens residency program and did not play in regular-season matches in 2019. He has played in eight HSBC Sevens Series tournaments, most recently in the Sydney Sevens. He also played in the AF international 7s, Rugby X for Team USA, the 2019 Rugbytown 7s with the Ramblin Jesters, the USA Club 7s nationals with Belmont Shore Blue, and the 2019 Octoberfest 7s for the U.S.

Marcus is from Carson, California and attended Carson High School, graduating in 2013. He played youth rugby since age 13 with the South Bay Spartans and later with Belmont Shore.

Following his high school graduation, he attended Notre Dame College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree with honors in Mathematics. He excelled in rugby and was selected as a Collegiate All-American in both rugby 15s and in 7s.

Marcus also found himself on the National team radar in sevens and went on tours with the USA Falcons to Chester in 2018 and to South America in 2019. He was also selected for the HSBC Sevens Series Dubai Sevens as the Eagles Sevens 13th man for injury cover. The team made the final and gained silver. Marcus was also named to the USA Men’s Eagles Sevens Residency program for 2019 and 2020 and hopes to earn a spot for Team USA in the 2020 Olympics.

The USA Sevens Residency supports players with training, nutrition, and includes modest financial remuneration. The San Diego Legion has been a supporter of USA National Team athletes and hopes that when opportunities arise that sevens teammates signed with the Legion can play professionally when available.
