Seattle Seawolves Adds Matt Brennan

The Seattle Seawolves have added Matt Brennan as a utility back to their 2020 extended roster. The 24-year-old center is 5’10” and 205 lbs.

Matt is a Seattle native and attended Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, Washington. He ran the 100 meters in track, wrestled, and was an All-Conference football player his senior year. He was also named in 2013 to the high school’s all-time roster. He also was a sports editor for the Highland Piper, the school’s newspaper.

Matt played rugby for the Seattle Vikings since he was in 6th grade. The Seattle Vikings won the 2012 Washington State Championships in rugby 7s and won the 2014 U19s State Championships in XVs for the first time.

He also played with the Washington Loggers for four years during high school and participated in the Great Northwest Challenge. Matt was selected as a USA High School All-American in sevens during his Junior and Senior years and participated in the Stars & Stripes 15s camp those same years. Matt played for EIRA Washington with his father Steve as head coach. He played with the USA HSAAs in the Las Vegas Invitational HS Elite Division in 2014 and at Rosslyn Park in England that same year.

Following his graduation from Shorecrest, Matt attended Arizona State University from 2014-2018 and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Government with a minor in Communications and Media Studies. He played both rugby sevens and fifteen at ASU and by his Sophmore year was the team’s captain through his senior year. He initially played flanker, as he did in high school, but later switched to inside center.

A highlight with the team was playing the Mexico National Team in the Rugby Bowl in 2016, despite losing to Las Serpentines 30-23. Matt was also honored as a Collegiate All-American and was a PAC 12 All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2018.

Matt also participated in the study abroad program while at ASU. Fall 2017 he studied Political Communication at the University of Edinburgh and played rugby with the first XVs.

After his graduation from ASU, Matt played rugby with the Seattle Saracens during the 2018-2019 season in the British Columbia Premier Division. He was part of the 2019 Seattle Seawolves preseason squad that played against the Vancouver Tide on December 22, 2018. He then traveled to Christchurch, New Zealand to play with Burnside Rugby Club in the Metro Premier Competition.

Matt now joins the Seattle Seawolves for the 2020 MLR season and will be a welcome team addition.

Seattle Seavoles Comments

“Growing up playing rugby in the Seattle Area it has always been my dream to represent Seattle at the highest possible level. It has been a pleasure to watch the Seawolves set the standard for Major League Rugby these past two years, and I can’t wait to contribute to keeping that standard rising, said Brennan. “I am absolutely thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of this team, and I look forward to the challenge ahead.”
