The Houston SaberCats re-signed Joe Kelly for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old wing/fullback is 6’2″ and 210 lbs. He turns 25 at the end of December.
During the 2019 MLR season, Joe played103 minutes in 5 matches. He carried 3 times for 20 meters and made 4 tackles. He also played for the West Houston Lions.
Joe was a multi-sport athlete ad at Greenwich High School in Connecticut. He attended there was 2009-2013 playing football, basketball, and rugby, the latter with his father as a coach. He also played lacrosse in middle school. While at Greenwich, the rugby team won 4 state championships and advanced to the Tier II National Championship Final in 2013, and he was a High School All-American.
Following his graduation, he attended Pennsylvania State University from 2013-2018, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Energy Business and Finance. He was a Collegiate All-American and played on the USA Under-20s team at the Junior World Rugby Trophy competition. Penn State was a top 10 D1A Collegiate Program and the team won the Rugby East title while there and played in the Collegiate Rugby Championship.
After graduating from Penn State, Joe played club rugby with New York Athletic Club and in Fall 2018, with the West Houston Lions. He also was an Assistant Rugby Coach at Greenwich High School.
Joe played in preseason rugby games with the Houston SaberCats and started at wing in the 2019 MLR season opener against Austin Elite Rugby at wing.
