The Houston SaberCats signed Matias Freyre for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old back three/center is 6’1″ and 190 lbs.
Matias was born in the U.S. and grew up playing rugby in Buenos Aires. He attended the Colegio Cardenal Newman, graduating in 2012. He then pursued an Administration & Management degree first at Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina and then Universidad del Salvador. He also has a diploma in Management Leadership in Sports Organizations from Instituto Tecnológico de Buenos Aires and has done a post-graduate program in Law and Management of Freight at Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina.
Matias played rugby for Club Newman from 2015-2019. He has played representative Rugby for the Buenos Aires under 18s and Under-21s teams. He also played for the Argentina Pumas in the HSBC World Sevens Series, making his debut at the Singapore Sevens in 2018.
The Houston SaberCats are excited to have Matias as a utility back, who is as comfortable in the midfield as he is at fullback. He is a strong ball carrier and will look to inject some flair and pace to the Sabercats backline.
