The Houston SaberCats announced their first player signing in Tiaan Loots for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old center is 6’0″ and 212 lbs. He turns 28 just prior to the beginning of the season.
Tiaan was born in Cape Town, South Africa and attended Boland Agricultural High School. He played club rugby with Durbell RFC and then attended North-West University in Potchefstroom where he played for the NWU Pukke. While at the university, he played in the Under-19 and Under-21 Provincial competition, as well as the NWU sevens. He also played with the Western Province touring side, the Leopards. In 2011 he was with the Under-18s, in 2012 with the Under-21s and also with the Sevens team.
From 2014-2018 he moved to Wales and played with RGC 1404. The first two years the team played in the Championship and then won promotion to the Principality Premiership. In 2017 the team won the Welsh Rugby Union National Cup.
During the 2018-2019 season, he played with the Newport Gwent Dragons in the Guinness Pro14 and in 2019 with Cross Keys in the Premiership.
Tiaan is an experienced center who will be a welcome addition for the SaberCats in 2020.
