Women’s Eagles 7s In Camp To Determine Squad for Brazil
Doug Coil
Jules McCoy, Women’s Eagles Sevens Head Coach, has convened a high perfomance camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California with the purpose of selecting the team to travel to São Paulo, Brazil for the second stop of the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.
A number of players at the facility just scrimmaged Canada’s Women’s Sevens players there on Friday after Canada spent two weeks at the OTC. Other players, like Meya Bizer and Carmen Farmer, just returned from the Coral Coast Sevens in Fiji where they played for the runners-up Serevi Selects. Cheta Emba, Samantha Pankey and Christy Ringgenberg will also join the resident athletes in camp.
The scrimmage between the USA and Canada served as a test for the USA Women’s Eagles Sevens. “For four months now we’ve been working on specific skills, techniques, and decision-making to execute a different way to play the game for us,” McCoy said. “They wanted to see if they could read the game the way we’ve been working on, and we don’t know what the opposition’s going to do.
“They wanted to test themselves to see if they could read the defense the way they wanted to read it, and also to see how our new defensive system played out. I do feel, because they felt they made progress, it built more confidence in the changes that were being made.”
It has been several months that Jules McCoy has been implementing a structure for the Women’s Eagles Sevens program. When the women take the pitch in Brazil, they will be familiar with system and with each other. They are an experienced group of athletes.
As a result, the team is likely to see improvements in performance at each stop in the Series as they build toward the Rio 2016 Olympic Summer Games.
The next stop in the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series is the Atlanta Sevens. Ticket purchases
