The Harlequins have been very busy this week in preparation for the match against the USA Men’s Eagles Sunday, August 30, 2015

At a Open Training Session and Youth Clinic, Adam Jones and Dave Ward, both Harlequins players, answered a few questions. In an article published yesterday, “Harlequins Open Training Session and Youth Clinic,” this was reviewed and interview links provided. I felt however, that it was important to spend more time allowing others to have a clearer idea of both players’ contributions to the game.

Adam Jones brings instant leadership to the Harlequins. His front row experience as a tight head prop cements him as “the cornerstone for any pack he has played in.” His Harlequins bio provides some insight into his accomplishments. “Adam began his career in 1998 at Neath before moving to the Ospreys when the region formed in 2003. During his 11 years with Ospreys, he made over 150 appearances, winning the Celtic League on four occasions. Jones is one of the most recognizable front row forwards in the game and was awarded the first of his 95 Welsh caps in 2003, against England in the Six Nations. Winning four Six Nations titles, the Abercrave born tight head has competed in the last three Rugby World Cups and toured with the British and Irish Lions on two occasions; first in 2009 and then on the victorious 2013 tour to Australia.”

After meeting him, I found him to be personable and very accommodating in taking the time after practice to speak with me. He is part of every outreach clinic and presentation that the Harlequins have scheduled this week. He indeed exemplifies a leadership role with the team.

My interview with Adam Jones  may be viewed on You Tube DJCoil Rugby Channel.

Dave Ward, Harlequins Hooker, was also actively involved in coaching the Youth Skills Clinic for Rugby PA. He is also slated to be one of the featured players in discussing elite sport and the management of professional sport.

Dave’s Harlequins bio provides a glimpse at his involvement with rugby and his contributions to the game. “Dave Ward joined the Harlequins in 2012 from Cornish Pirates, a side he made over 100 appearances for. It was during the 2013/14 season that the former Bath, Northampton Saints and Sale Sharks man rose to fame with his electric form. Claiming five Man of the Match awards and becoming the pioneer of countless turnovers, he was the 2013/14 Players’ Player of the season. His efforts were rewarded by being named to Stuart lancaster’s England squad for the 2014 tour of New Zealand, playing in the mid week win over the Crusaders.’

I found the the latter part of the next statement of particular interest. “Away from the field, Ward has a passion for antiques and is Head Coach at Guildford RFC.” The balancing act between being a professional rugby player and coaching was something I wanted to discuss.

My interview with Dave Ward is also available on the DJCoil Rugby You Tube Channel.
