San Diego Legion Signs Tupou Ma’afu Afungia

San Diego Legion signed Tupou Ma’afu Afungia for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 23-year-old back row is 6’2″ and 225 lbs (per Tonga Rugby in 2019 and will be updated when confirmed).

Tupou is from Nuku ‘alofa, Tonga. He attended Tonga College ‘Atele and represented Tonga at the Under-16s and for two years at the under-20s. He also attended West Lake Boys High School on a rugby scholarship, and later Māori Agricultural College.

He played rugby for the Hawkes Bay Academy and in 2022 was a member of the Hawkes Bay Bunnings National Provincial Championship squad. According to the Legion,” in 2022 Tupou was awarded the Graeme Lowe award, which is judged on the criteria of commitment, loyalty, work ethic, and promise.”
