The Seattle Seawolves signed Jean Droste for the 2024 Major League Rugby season. The 29-year-old lock (30 in January) is 6’7″ and 245 lbs.
Jean was born in Pretoria, South Africa. He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and then the University of Kwa Zulu-Natal.
He began playing rugby in primary school for the Bulls Bulls and was selected for their U13s for the 2007 Craven Week. After finishing high school he attended the Blue Bulls Academy and played for the U19s in winning the 2013 Provincial Championship. In 2014 he played with the U21s in the Provincial Championship.
Jean then played with the Sharks XV in the 2015 Vodacom Cup, as well as the U21s Provincial Championship. In 2016 he played in the Varsity Shield competition with UKZN Inpi, and with the Sharks XV in the Currie Cup (2016-2018). In 2017-2018 he played in 3 Super Rugby matches with the Sharks before traveling to Japan for the 2018-2019 season with the Kubota Spears. In 2019 he played with the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup and the Blue Bulls XV in The Rugby Challenge.
In 2020 he went back to Japan to play for the NEC Green Rockets and in 2021 returned to South Africa to play with the Free State Cheetahs. In 2022 he played in Japan for the Munakata Sanix Blues before returning home to play for the Cheetahs and the Free State Cheetahs.
