San Diego Legion re-signed Tupou Ma’afu Afungia for the 2024 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old back row is 6’2″ and 230 lbs.
Tupou played 793 minutes in 13 matches, starting 12, and scored 3 tries for San Diego Legion in 2023.
Tupou is from Nuku ‘alofa, Tonga. He attended Tonga College ‘Atele and represented Tonga at the Under-16s and for two years at the under-20s. He also attended West Lake Boys High School on a rugby scholarship and later Māori Agricultural College.
He played rugby for the Hawkes Bay Academy and in 2022 was a member of the Hawkes Bay Bunnings National Provincial Championship squad. According to the Legion,” in 2022 Tupou was awarded the Graeme Lowe award, which is judged on the criteria of commitment, loyalty, work ethic, and promise.”
