The Houston SaberCats have signed their round 1 (#2) selection of the 2023 MLR Collegiate Draft, Max Schumacher, for the 2024 Major League Rugby season. The 22-year-old fullback (23 in June) is 5’10” and 195 lbs.
Max is from Sacramento, California, and graduated in 2019 from Jesuit High School where he played four years of varsity rugby. He was a three-time MVP, and the co-captain his senior year when the team won the National Single School Championship. He also played for the Eagle Impact Rugby Academy U16s in 2017 and for the U18s in 2018.
Max attended the University of California, Berkeley from 2019 through his graduation in 2023 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He played rugby and was a three-time PAC 12 Champion, a 2022 D1A Collegiate All-American Second Team, and a 2023 D1A Collegiate All-American First Team selection, as well as a 2023 Rudy Scholz Finalist. The team also was a 2023 D1A Finalist.
