The Chicago Hounds signed Nick McCarthy through the 2025 Major League Rugby season. The 28-year-old scrumhalf (29 in March) is 5’11” and 185 lbs.
Nick was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was raised in Ireland. Most recently, the scrum half appeared in 16 contests for Leinster during the 2022-2023 season.
Nick attended St. Michael’s College from 2007 through 2013 and played rugby. While there, he played in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup, as well as for Leinster U16s and U18s before joining their sub-academy in 2013. He was called up to their full academy side before the 2014-2015 season.
He made his debut for Leinster’s senior side during the 2015-2016 campaign with three appearances in the year. The following season he played four times before earning promotion to their senior squad ahead of the 2017-2018 campaign. He scored three tries in his 21 appearances that year and helped the team win the PRO 14 Championship as well as the European Rugby Champions Cup. The team then defended their PRO 14 title the following year.
Nick signed with Munster before their 2019-2020 season and spent two years there before making a return to Leinster where he played from 2021 through 2023.
Nick is an experienced halfback having played 85 games with 16 starts across nine seasons with Leinster and Munster and has totaled 2,195 minutes with 25 points scored on five tries for the two Irish teams.
International Career
Nick represented Ireland’s U18s in 2013 and the U20s in 2014 and 2015.
In 2023 he was called up into the USA National team camp and earned three caps for the Eagles, making two starts for the team and scoring a try on his debut against Romania, a 31-17 win for the United States. He also started for the Eagles’ win against Stade Toulousain in September.
University Education
Nick attended University College Dublin from 2013 through his graduation in 2017 with a Mechanical Engineering Degree.
