The Houston SaberCats posted a photo of Orrin Bizer yesterday, which appears to indicate that their Round 1, 9th pick, in the 2023 MLR Collegiate Draft had signed for the 2024 season. “Last week we got to welcome Orrin Bizer to the SaberCat Stadium as an official Houston SaberCat.” The 22-year-old flanker is 6’2″ and 215 lbs.
Orrin hopes to be selected for the USA to play in the Pan American Games this Fall ahead of the MLR 2024 season.
Orrin is from Spring, Texas, attended The Woodlands High School, and in 2017 began playing rugby for Woodlands Youth Rugby Club. With the Woodlands, the team won the 2019 Texas State Championship.
He then went to Life University in Marietta, Georgia, where according to the USA Rugby Foundation, is expected to graduate this September with a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science. He played rugby with the university, winning two consecutive National Sevens Championships in 2022 and 2023. He also was a Mid-South All-Conference First Team selection, a 2023 D1A First Team All-American, and the 2023 Prusmack Award recipient.
In both 2022 and 2023, he played for the USA Under-23 in the Rugbytown Sevens, helping the team finish in second place in 2022 and first place in 2023. He was also named to the All-Tournament Team in 2023. Orrin also played professional sevens rugby in the Premier Rugby Sevens competition for the Locals in 2023.
Orrin now turns his attention to playing professional XVs rugby with the Houston SaberCats.
