LA Obtains Jurie Van Vuuren from Utah Warriors

Los Angeles, formerly Rugby ATL, obtained Jurie Van Vuuren for the 2024 Major League Rugby season from the Utah Warriors in exchange for 2024 salary cap considerations. The 30-year-old No.8/lock is 6’4″ and 265 lbs.

Jurie played 641 minutes in 14 matches, starting 7 and scoring 1 try for the Utah Warriors in 2023. He played for the Tel-Aviv Heat during the 2022-23 Europe Super Cup season and helped the team make the final.

Jurie played 1178 minutes in 16 matches, starting 15 and scoring one try for Utah in 2022. In 2021 he played 1313 minutes in 17 matches, 16 as a starter, scored 6 tires, carried for 494 meters & made 151 tackles for a success rate of 82.51%. 

During the truncated 2020 MLR season, Jurie started all five matches playing 381 minutes at No.8. Jurie played with Rhinos Rugby 10s at the World Tens Series in Bermuda in the Fall of 2020.

Jurie was born in Ladybrand, South Africa, and attended Oakdale Agricultural High School. Following his graduation in 2011, he attended the Western Province Rugby Institute, playing with the U19s in 2012, and the U21s in 2013, and moved to the Senior ranks in 2014 despite being eligible to play for the U21s.

He also was selected for the 2012 South Africa U20s for the IRB Junior World Championship. In 2013 he also played for the Stellenbosch University Maties.

Jurie moved on to the Stormers in 2014 making his debut against the Brumbies off the bench in Canberra and playing through the 2016 season. He played with Western Province from 2014-2017, Southern Kings from 2017-2019, and Eastern Province Elephants in 2018-2019 in the Currie Cup and Rugby Challenge.
