The Miami Sharks signed South African Roelof Smith for the 2024 Major League Rugby season. The 30-year-old flanker (31 in January) is 6’3″ and 235 lbs.
Roelof joins the team after playing for the Cheetahs and Free State Cheetahs.
Roelof is from Queenstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa. He graduated from the Waterkloff School in Pretoria and played youth rugby for the Border Bulldogs U16s in Grant Khomo Week in 2009 and for the U18s in Craven Week in 2010. He played for the Blue Bulls in Craven Week in 2011 and for the U19s in the Provincial Championship.
In 2013, he represented South Africa in the IRB Junior (U20s) Championship, in 2014 he played for the University of Pretoria Tuks, and in 2016 played for the Springboks XV against the Barbarians.
He played with the Blue Bulls in the 2013 Vodacom Cup and has represented the team through 2019. He also played in 27 Super Rugby matches for the Bulls between 2013 and 2019.
From 2019 through 2012 he played for the Lions, as well as for the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup. He played for Western Province during the 2021-2022 season and then for the Central Cheetahs in 2022-2023, as well as the Free State Cheetahs in 2023.
