Rugby ATL Signs Sidney Tobias

Rugby ATL signed Sidney Tobias for the remainder of the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 34-year-old hooker is 5’10” and 225 lbs.

Sidney was born in Caledon, South Africa. His father Errol, was the first Springbok of color, making his debut in 1981 against Ireland.

Sidney played rugby at Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch. He also played age-grade rugby for Western Province from 2005 through 2010 in Grant Khomo Week, for the U18s during Academy and Craven Weeks, and for the U19s and U21s in the Provincial Championships.

He played with the University of Pretoria Turks during the 2013 and 2014 Varsity Cup and with Western Province in the 2010 through 2012 Vodacom Cups.

In 2012 he played with South West Districts Eagles in the Currie Cup First Division before playing one match with the Blue Bulls in the 2013 Vodacom Cup. He switched to the Griquas for the 2015-2016 season and then played Pro12 rugby with Zebre in 2017.

For the next three years, he played club rugby while working full-time in his own construction company. This had him waking up at 4:30 am to go to the gym before working 7 am to 4 pm, including three times a week at the Zondereinde Platinum Mine. after work, he had fitness training. His diligence paid off as he returned to play for the Bulls in the United Rugby Championship and Blue Bulls for 2021-2023. He now joins Rugby ATL to fill an injury need at hooker.
