Rugby New York signed Daquan Perry for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old hooker, who has played back-row, is 5’9″ and 230 lbs.
Daquan played club rugby for White Plains from 2020 through Spring 2022, went to USA Club Sevens Nationals in 2022 with Old Blue, and during the Fall played with Rugby HTX in the American Rugby Premiership. He returns to Rugby New York after signing later in the 2021 season, but not seeing regular season action. He also played with New York’s U23s in 2021.
Daquan is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended Conestoga High School, where he wrestled, played football as a defensive lineman and running back, and played rugby. He was an All-Main Line Honorable Mention in football his senior year, before graduating in 2016. He was a RugbyPA All-State selection and was on the 2016 USA Rugby North East Regional Cup Championship team.
He attended Kutztown University from 2016 until his graduation with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sport and Fitness Administration Management in December 2020. His team regularly was a leading team at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship and had a top 4 finish in the last year of the tournament in 2019. The team also made appearances in the USA Rugby Collegiate Sevens Nationals, finishing in third place in 2018, and winning the 2020 qualifier in Las Vegas for a spot in Nationals which did not materialize due to the tournament cancellation due to the pandemic. The team also was D1A Rugby East Champions in 2019.
Daquan played for Schuylkill River and also for their Academy U23 team in 7s. In 2019 the team won the Eastern Qualifier in Philadelphia which was an automatic qualifier for Nationals. The Exiles ended Club Nationals with a 4th place finish.
DaQuan is a proven try scorer, an excellent tackler, and has a strong work ethic. He also gives back to the community. In 2018 he returned to his high school and became a member of the Conestoga rugby coaching staff, working with grades 8 and 9. He also has coached with the Berks County High School Program in Sevens.
