The Houston SaberCats re-signed Louritz van der Schyff for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old center (25 in May) is 6’3″ and 227 lbs.
Louritz played 634 minutes in 8 starts and scored 7 tries for the SaberCats in 2022.
Louritz is from Middleburg, in the South African province of Mpumalanga. He attended Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool and later the Unversity of Johannesburg where he played in the Varsity Cup, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce while also playing for the Lions. While at the University of Pretoria working on a post-graduate degree in Entrepreneurship, he played in the Varsity Cup as the captain for the Tuks in 2021.
Lourtiz “is seen by many as one of the best centers that have yet to fulfill his potential. It is not his fault that he has not done so. Van der Schyff has been unlucky. He sustained torn ligaments in his knee twice since 2017.”
He was the captain of the SA Schools in 2016, while also playing for the Lions U19s. He played with the Lions during 2019-2020. He was also the Bulls captain for Craven Week, played in the Vodacom Cup, and in 2021 made his senior Currie Cup debut with the Blue Bulls.
