Houston SaberCats Re-Signs Keni Nasoqeqe

The Houston SaberCats re-signed Keni Nasoqeqe for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 29-year-old back-row/lock is 6’4″ and 250 lbs.

Keni played 1112 minutes in 17 matches, starting 14, for the SaberCats in 2022. He toured South Africa with the USA Falcons for the Toyota Challenge against the Toyota Cheetahs and Pumas.

Keni played 726 minutes in 12 matches, starting 8, and scored one try for San Diego Legion in 2021. He also played for Belmont Shore in the 2021 USA Club Sevens Nationals.

He played 159 minutes in 3 matches, starting twice, and scoring one try during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. In 2019 he started 12 of 13 matches, playing 926 minutes and scoring 2 tries. He carried 68 times for 335 meters, had 1 linebreak, 2 tackle breaks, 2 offloads, and made 144 tackles.

In 2019 he played rugby sevens for Belmont Shore at the USA Club Sevens Nationals and for the SoCal Griffons at the Rugbytown Sevens.

Keni is from Lautoka, Fiji where rugby is a National sport, and attended Lelean Memorial School. He arrived in California prior to the Samurai Sports Pacific Rugby Premiership in 2015 and has played with Belmont Shore since then. During the 2017 season, the PRP took a hiatus and the team played in the California Cup.

In 2017 Keni won Player of the Week honors for his performance against the Olympic Club. He also played for Belmont Shore in the 2018 USA Rugby Club Sevens Nationals.

Keni is a strong and explosive athlete who was an excellent addition to the San Diego Legion in 2019. He played in 13 games before an injury cut his season short. Recently, he has played with the Belmont Shore RFC Sevens team.
