The Houston SaberCats re-signed Gerrie Labuschagne for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old wing, who has played fullback and center, is 6’5″ and 220 lbs.
Gerrie played 761 minutes in 11 starts and scored 3 tries and kicked a penalty goal for the SaberCats in 2022.
Gerrie was born in Springs, South Africa, and attended Die Anker, Brakpan High School. After high school, he played with Free State U19s in 2014 at the U19s Provincial Championship.
Gerrie played for Free State XV at the Vodacom Cup in 2015, as well as the U21s at the U21s Provincial Championship. He was included in the Cheetahs wide training Super Rugby group in 2016, played the Currie Cup Qualifications with Free State XV, and again for the Free State U21 in the Provincial Championship.
In 2017 he played with the Golden Lions XV and the Pumas before moving to Japan to play with the Shizuoka Blue Revs in the Japan Rugby League One competition from 2018-2021. He also played with the Pumas in 2021.
Gerrie also attended the University of the Free State.
