Rugby New York re-signed Joe Basser for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 23-year-old back-row (24 in June) is 6’2″ and 230 lbs.
Joe played 404 minutes in 14 matches, starting twice, recording a tackle rate of 94.39% (101/107) for the 2022 MLR Shield Champions, Rugby New York.
Joe was born in Manhattan in New York City to Australian parents and raised in Melbourne, Australia. He played rugby since he was 5 years old in Victorian Schools.
He attended Trinity College Grammar School, KEW, from 2010 through his graduation in 2017. While there, he was the captain of the 1st XV and helped the team have their most successful season in sevens years. His performance gained him the Weary Dunlop Young Achievers Award, as well as a rugby scholarship to Melbourne University.
He attended Trinity College, the University of Melbourne in 2018, and the University of Melbourne from 2018-2021 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Marketing/Management. He also played rugby at the university for the Unicorns in the Dewar Shield competition.
Joe was named to the Melbourne Rebels U19s team in 2018 and for the 2020/2021 New South Wales Shute Shield season, playing for the Hunter Wildfires.
Joe holds both Australian and United States passports and that is a bonus for Rugby New York in 2022.
