The Chicago Hounds signed Mason Koch for the 2023 Major League Rugby season after obtaining his rights from the 2022 MLR dispersal draft from NOLA Gold in exchange for salary cap considerations. The 25-year-old hooker is 5’9″ and 230 lbs.
Mason played 211 minutes in 12 matches, starting 1, scoring 1 try, carrying 16 times for 111 meters (6.9 MPC), and was perfect on his 30 tackle attempts for Austin Gilronis in 2022.
In 2021 he played 267 minutes in 9 matches, starting 2, scoring 2 tries, and carrying 20 times for 109 meters (5.5 MPC), and making 39 tackles on his 41 attempts, with one breakdown steal for the Gilgronis.
Mason is from Coralville, Iowas, and attended Iowa City West High School. He was a multi-sport athlete playing football, wrestling, and playing baseball. When he entered high school, he discovered rugby and was a founder of the high school club, playing for the team for three years.
He was also an outstanding student and was admitted to Dartmouth College where he continued to play rugby and helped the team earn four consecutive Ivy League Championship during his tenure. He also gained individual honors as a 2019 Collegiate All-American Honorable Mention and was the 2019 and 2020 Team Captain. He also was the recipient of the Wayne Young Award as the team’s MVP.
