Rugby New York Re-Signs Ishmail Shabazz

Rugby New York re-signed Ishmail Shabazz for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old wing is 5’10” and 215 lbs. 

Ishmail played 128 minutes in 3 matches, starting twice for Rugby New York in 2022. He also played in the Premier Rugby Sevens this Summer with the Headliners and this Fall with New York Athletic Club in the American Rugby Premiership.

Ishmail is from Portland, Oregon, and attended Central Catholic High School where he played football as a wide receiver and cornerback, and also played baseball. 

He attended the University of Oregon from 2015 to 2019, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Crime, Law, and Society. He also began playing with the UO Men’s rugby team in 2016 and was the MVP for the 2016-2017 season, as well as in 2018-2019. 

After recovering from a knee injury in his senior year, he traveled to New Zealand and played for Te Awamutu Sports Rugby Club in 2020 and 2021. During the Fall of 2021, he played for Pathway 404, Rugby ATL’s Academy team.
