Rugby New York re-signed Charlie Hewitt for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 27-year-old lock (28 in February) is 6’7″, and 265 lbs.
Charlie played 822 minutes in 16 matches, starting 11 for Rugby New York in 2022. He played 522 minutes in 15 matches, starting 7, during the 2021 MLR season. He then was selected for the USA Selects tour which played two matches against Uruguay A.
Charlie joined New York after the 2020 MLR season began and started two matches. Prior to the beginning of the 2019 season with the Houston SaberCats, he suffered a season-ending injury. He was a key contributor in 2018, playing 549 minutes in the 8 matches he played, 7 as a starter, scoring 2 tries, and also serving as an Academy coach.
Charlie went to Devonport High School for Boys from 2006-2011 and then to Ivybridge College from 2011-2013. He attended The Open University in 2017 in a Bachelor’s Distance Learning Program, which leads to a BA in Business Administration and Management.
Charlie’s rugby development progressed at the Exeter Chiefs Academy and represented England for the Under-18s. He played for the London Scottish FC in the English Championship and in the British Irish Cup. In 2015, he switched to the Worcester Warriors Academy and made his senior debut against the Barbarians at home in September 2015. His first match against a Senior Premiership team was against the Saracens in the last match of the 2015/2016 season. In the 2016/2017 season, he made 5 appearances for the Warriors, four of them in the European Challenge Cup.
Charlie was a good addition to the Houston SaberCats during the inaugural 2018 Major League Rugby season. After the season he returned to Plymouth, U.K to spend some time with family and friends and was excited to begin the 2019 MLR season, however, an injury derailed his season.
