Seattle Seawolves re-signed Cole Zarcone for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 25-year-old wing (26 in May) is 5’11” and 200 lbs. Cole was the team’s Round 2, Pick 24 in the 2020 Major League Rugby Collegiate Draft.
Cole played 41 minutes in 3 matches for the Seawolves in 2022. He also played during the Summer for the Loonies Premier Rugby Sevens team.
He played 302 minutes in 6 matches, starting 3, and scored 2 tries for the Legion in 2021. He also played in the inaugural professional sevens league in the United States, Premier Rugby Sevens, in Memphis on October 9, 2021.
Cole is from Camas, Washington, a suburb of Seattle, and attended Camas High School. He concentrated on football during high school and continued to play football in his freshman year at Central Washington University in 2015.
He transitioned to rugby following his first semester at Central Washington and was a USA U20s Camp Invitee in 2016. He was CWU’s Back of the Year in 2017, a 3x Academic All-American 2018-20, 2x 7s CWU Player of the Year 2018-19, Team Captain in the 2019-20 season, and a 2020 Finalist for the Rudy Scholz College Player of the Year Award., an All-American Honorable Mention in rugby sevens in 2018, and a 2019 Sevens Collegiate All American.
Cole has graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis on Logistics, Materials, and Supply Chain Management.
“What’s great about Cole being drafted is he came to CWU as a football player and transitioned over to rugby. He wanted to learn and be good at this sport, so he stayed in Ellensburg every summer since his freshman year to hone his craft and get better. To play rugby for just four years and now get drafted to the MLR, is a huge testament to the type of person he is. His work ethic and character are one of a kind,” Coach Thornley said. “As a captain each of the last two years, he’s led by example. Like Brian [Nault], he refused to let anything get in his way to win. I am excited for him in this next chapter of his playing career.”
