San Diego Legion re-signed Tiaan Loots for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 30-year-old center (31 in February) is 6’0″ and 215 lbs.
Tiaan played 1002 minutes in 14 matches, starting 13, in 2022 for the Legion. He joined the Legion during the 2021 season and played 614 minutes in 8 starts, scoring 3 tries.
Tiaan played 274 minutes in 4 matches as a starter for the Houston SaberCats in 2020. During Fall 2020, he played with the Ohio Aviators Tens in the World Tens Series in Bermuda.
Tiaan was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and attended Boland Agricultural High School. He played club rugby with Durbell RFC and then attended North-West University in Potchefstroom where he played for the NWU Pukke. While at the university, he played in the Under-19 and Under-21 Provincial competitions, as well as the NWU sevens. He also played with the Western Province touring side, the Leopards. In 2011 he was with the Under-18s, in 2012 with the Under-21s, and also with the Sevens team.
From 2014-2018 he moved to Wales and played with RGC 1404. The first two years the team played in the Championship and then won promotion to the Principality Premiership. In 2017 the team won the Welsh Rugby Union National Cup.
During the 2018-2019 season, he played with the Newport Gwent Dragons in the Guinness Pro14 and in 2019 with Cross Keys in the Premiership.
Tiaan is an experienced center that will be a welcome addition to the Legion for the rest of the 2021 season.
