San Diego Legion Signs Sama Malolo

San Diego Legion signed Sama Malolo for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. The 24-year-old hooker/back-row (25 in February) is 6’0″ and 240 lbs.

Sama previously played for the Utah Warriors in 2020 and 2021. He started one match as the openside flanker and entered as a hooker in another during the COVID-19-shortened 2020 MLR season. Following the season, he played with Southern Districts in the Shute Shield. In 2021 he started the season as a hooker and was at No8 the last five matches. He scored 11 tries in 10 appearances in 2021 and helped Utah reach the Western Conference Final.

He then returned to Australia and was part of the Waratahs extended squad in 2022 and started every match for Southern Districts in the Shute Shield.

Sama is from Auckland, New Zealand, and attended Auckland Grammar School before moving to Australia and attending Sydney Boys High School. He also attended the University of Wollongong.

Sama played for the Western Force Academy in 2017 and for the Perth Spirit National Rugby Championship side prior to playing Super Rugby with the Melbourne Rebels in 2018. He also played in 2018 with the Melbourne Rebels in the Brisbane Global Rugby Tens.

He played for the junior Wallabies in the World U20 Championship In both 2017 and 2018 and then joined Suntory Sungoliath in the Japanese Top League Championship in 2019.
