The San Diego Legion re-signed Eagles scrumhalf and wing, Nate Augspurger for the 2023 Major League Rugby season. Nate, who is from Minneapolis, Minnesota, is 31-years-old (32 in January), 5’8″, and 180 lbs.
He played 601 minutes in 10 matches, starting 8, and scored 4 tries for the Legion in 2022. In October he played in the Toyota Challenge for the USA Falcons starting at scrumhalf against the Toyota Cheetahs and as a reserve against the Pumas. He hopes to secure the last remaining spot for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France in the World Rugby repechage tournament in November.
Nate returned from injury and played 238 minutes in 6 matches, starting 4, during the 2021 MLR season. In the truncated 2020 MLR season, he started three matches, playing 172 minutes and scoring one try, before an injury sidelined him.
In 2019 played 17 of 18 matches with the team, playing 1216 minutes, scoring 5 tries, carrying 94 timeshavingr 676 meters, had 9 linebreaks, 1kickingle break, kicked 75 times for 1,616 meters, and made 196 tackles. He joined the Legion for the inaugural MLR season in 2018 and played 400 minutes in five matches as a starter and scored one try.
Augspurger went to Minneapolis Southwest High School before attending college at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities from 2008 until his graduation with a B.A. in Sociology in 2012. He played rugby at the university and was a Collegiate All-American. He also played rugby sevens with the Youngbloodz.
Augspurger has also played club rugby for the East Side Banshees (beginning in high school), Old Band lue of New York, the Northeast Academy, and has represented the New York 7s twice. Both times were at the World Club in 2013 and in 2014 in London.
USA Rugby National Team
Nate Augspurger signed a developmental contract with USA Rugby for the 2012-2013 season and trained at Chula Vista. He was invited to the Eagles 7s camp in 2013 and signed a contract with the Eagles 7s for the 2013-2014 season. He made his HSBC World Sevens Series debut in Dubai in 2014 and then played in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He has earned 15 caps for the Eagles team.
Nate has also represented Team USA at the 2015 Pan American Games, earning a Bronze medal. In 2016 he was selected as a traveling reserve for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Nate Augspurger has also played for the Eagles XVs from 2016 to the present. He is Eagle 491 and made his debut against Italy in San Jose, California on June 18, 2016. Since then he has earned 33 caps, starting 19 times as scrumhalf or at wing. He has also been the captain or vice-captain of the team several times. Nate was selected for the November 2018 internationals, but prior to playing the Maori All-Blacks, he was injured. He returned to international duty in the 2019 Pacific Nations Cup and then played at the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He will remember playing against New Zealand on October 23, 2021, where he scored the first USA try against the All Blacks just before the half. Later in the match, he switched to wing. t caps.
