San Diego Legion Obtains Luke Burton

San Diego Legion signed Luke Burton for the 2023 Major League Rugby season after a trade with the LA Giltinis for salary cap space in 2023. The 28-year-old center/fullback/flyhalf (29 in Feb) is 5’11” and 205 lbs. He returns to the Legion after playing two years with the Giltinis.

Luke played in 14 matches with the Giltinis in 2022 and scored 20 conversions and made 4 penalty goals. In 2021 he played 1150 minutes in 16 matches, starting 14, and scored 40 points (14 conversions and 4 penalty goals).

He played for San Diego Legion in the pandemic-shortened 2000 season, playing 400 minutes, starting 5 matches, and scoring 38 points (11 conversions and 5 penalty goals.

Luke is from Perth, Western Australia. He attended Hale School where he played rugby and played age-grade rugby in Western Australia. He also played on the Australia Under-20s in the IRB Junior World Championship in 2013 in France and in 2014 in New Zealand.

He played for Western Force from 2014-2017 and earned 25 Super Rugby caps. He also played for Perth Spirit from 2014-2016, making 11 National Rugby Championship appearances. From 2017-2019 he played in the France Pro 2 with Biarritz Olympique, making 31 appearances.
