New England Free Jacks Obtains Zach Short

The New England Free Jacks obtained Houston SaberCats Zachary Short ahead of their week 13 match against the Utah Warriors. The soon to be 25-year-old/scrumhalf is 6’1” and 195lbs.

Zach played with the Houston SaberCats and their Academy team, Rugby HTX, in 2022. The terms of his joining the Free Jacks have not been announced, but it appears to be a loan.

Zach played 231 minutes in 9 matches, starting 3, for the SaberCats in 2021. He was a reserve for three matches during the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.

After the 2020 MLR season, he returned to New Zealand and played rugby XVs and 7s with Greeton Marist.

Zach is from Redding, California but moved with his family to Tauranga, New Zealand when he was nine months old.

Zach attended Tauranga Boys’ College in Tauranga, New Zealand, and played rugby while there. He then played with the Greerton Colts in 2015 and later Greerton Marist in the Bay of Plenty Premier Club Rugby competition. Zach also played representative rugby in the Ellis Shield U45kg competition.

In 2018 he was named Player of the Year for Greerton Marist and also played for the Waikato U85kg side. In 2019 he also played for Bay of Plenty Development.

Zach is an experienced halfback, wing, and kicker, who will provide the SaberCats with flexibility in the backs during the 2021 MLR season.
