San Diego Legion Signs Nico Gilli

San Diego Legion signed SoCal native Nico Gilli for the 2022 MLR season. The 22-year-old scrumhalf (23 later this month) is 5’7” and 155lbs.

Nico is from Encinitas, CA, and began his rugby career at the age of 10 years old at the local club in Carlsbad, Coastal Dragons RFC. He attended La Costa Canyon High School where he helped the team advance to the state finals.

After high school, he was invited to the Sharks Academy in Durban, SA. Where he spent time training alongside the Sharks Academy and representing the Durban U18’s.

Nico then attended San Diego State University, where he captained the rugby team from 2019 until 2021. During his time at SDSU, he was awarded MVP in 2019 and honor of Treasure Island Dream Team sevens player. He was awarded a scholarship at the Auckland International Rugby Academy and represented the Eden RFC eagles Under-20s. In 2021 he played for the OMBAC Men’s Senior team, leading them to a fifth-place finish in the 2021 Rugby 7’s National Championship, and now joins San Diego Legion in 2022.
